Oregon
August 2022 • Oregon has burned a lot since the Biscuit Fire torched half a million acres 20 years ago. Heat waves and extreme drought have become common, and wildfire season is more tense because it lasts longer. Burn scars, brown evergreens, emaciated waterfalls, and yellow skies are like sad checkboxes for this increasing fragility. Spent seven weeks housesitting for a friend in Salem, and drove hundreds of miles around the Willamette Valley and national forests. Even trees next to the Pacific have become tinder for previously unimaginable catastrophe. Oregon is a wonderland, but it makes you wonder for how much longer.
