September 2020 • Passed through here during a pregnant pause: one month after the Sturgis biker rally and one month before a stampede for ICU beds. Thanks, patriots. The western half of South Dakota is one of the most beautiful landscapes I've seen in the U.S.—and probably the most American, judging by the weirdness of Mount Rushmore. Thieves not only stole this land but also carved their faces on it so no one would miss the point. Political signage throughout the state leads me to believe there might be another face added soon.
