Tunisia
Northern Tunisia
April 2012 • Pickpocketed on the first day and attacked by bees on the last, two weeks in Tunisia were nothing short of a challenge. One day up, the next down; one minute hassled, the next coddled. Always on high alert for a sudden change of luck. Tunisia was the first Arab Spring country to toss out its dictator and the first to hold free and fair elections. Tourism has plummeted, but the uncertainties of visiting are nothing compared to what Tunisians themselves are facing. I'd venture the most urgent task for the new government is to create jobs for the legion of young men sitting idly in cafes, waiting for their revolution to finally pay off.
