La Paz
March 2021 • A sincere love letter to this city. Spent 8 days enjoying the heart & soul of Baja—outnumbered not by gringos from San Diego and Arizona but by middle-class Mexican families on vacation or strolling the malecón. Street food was outstanding and never knocked me off stride, though the streets themselves were relatively empty during what should've been high season. People's diligent mask-wearing and hand-sanitizing reminded me that not all first visits will be like this, and for once I didn't feel cheated by the virus. Thanks to everyone who made this a one-of-a-kind stay, especially Jack & Sonia, Esther & Paty, Francisco, Lalo & his cousin, the wizards at Tacos el Estadio and Tacos Carnitas de Don Abraham, and the very personable Mexican-Lebanese manager at La French (formerly Chez Jacques).
