Guanajuato

February 2014 • Draped across a mountain basin like a Technicolor quilt, Guanajuato and its cobblestone streets, colonial-era basilicas, and candy-colored facades are so sweet they made my teeth hurt. Formerly a mining town, GTO is now home to a large university and a major annual arts festival. Lots of foreigners flock here to learn Spanish, and a few come to teach their own language. How this town retains its Mexican-ness despite a constant flow of visitors is a mystery. Thanks to Jess, Rebeca, Paco, Roberto, Mariana, Ken, Brenda, Kayleen, and Jesus for making my week in GTO feel like a month—and I mean that in a good way.
