Sofia • Plovdiv

September 2010 • Bulgaria is next to Turkey, which pretty well sums up my interest in Bulgaria. The capital Sofia was all kinds of meh—I was out of there after just a day. But Plovdiv is a sweet spot, with centuries-old architecture, lots of art galleries, and cobblestone streets so treacherous I was afraid I'd bust an ankle in the dark.
